Where to install your watch case

Halloway Belgrave 6 winder installed on a desk

A good, ill-positioned box protects less well than a well-positioned ordinary box. Here's what really matters.

1. Light

This is the first and most underestimated factor. Direct sunlight yellows light-coloured dials, fades leather straps and hardens their fibres. The process is slow and irreversible.

A window edge is the worst possible slot, even behind a glazing. A console two meters from the window, back to the light, is enough to fix the problem.

This also distinguishes a solid lid from a glass lid. Choose glass to view your collection rather than to protect it from light.

2. Moisture

The bathroom is to be excluded. Even waterproof, a watch does not appreciate the repeated cycles of hot steam: the seals age faster, the condensation settles, the leather straps mould.

Also avoid walls overlooking the exterior in old houses, and unheated rooms.

3. Stability

A flat and stable surface, apart from a passage. A box placed on the edge of a piece of furniture ends up falling, and a box filled with watches falls heavy.

For a winder, add another criterion: avoid direct contact with a hollow partition, which amplifies the motor's gentle sound. Solid furniture absorbs it better.

4. The height of access

An often overlooked criterion with a daily impact. A box placed too high forces you to handle watches without seeing properly, making them easier to drop.

The ideal height is between the waist and chest. On a vertical winder, also plan the clearance necessary to open the door. If the slot is under a low shelf, a horizontal model with a lateral opening such as Richmond 2 solves the problem.

The right slots

The desk. A good height, a stable surface and controlled light. The most obvious place for a winder: you can see it running and pick up your watch as you leave.

The dressing room. Dark, dry and within easy reach. The ideal place for a large collection, protected from light.

The bedroom dresser. Practical for the evening gesture. Just check the morning sun exposure.

The slots to avoid

Bathrooms, windowsills, above radiators, unstable furniture and drawers shared with keys or coins.

What about security?

A watch box displays your watches and protects them from scratches and dust. A lock on a box is a convenient closure, not protection against theft. If your collection's value warrants it, the answer is an anchored safe and suitable insurance, not a locked cabinet.
