The Halloway guide

Do you need a watch winder?

An automatic watch is powered by a rotor that turns as you move your wrist. Take it off and the mainspring slowly unwinds: depending on the movement, the watch stops after about 38 hours to a few days.

A winder recreates that motion in programmed cycles, so the watch keeps time and its date or complications stay set. It makes sense in three cases: you rotate between several automatic watches, your watch has a calendar that is tedious to reset, or you just want it ready to wear.

It does nothing for a quartz watch, a hand-wound watch, or a single automatic you wear every day. We would rather tell you than sell you something that sits unused.

Which size to choose

Count the automatic watches you actually wear in rotation, not every watch you own.

One watch. Ashford 1 is the classic closed box. Oxford 1 is a round shape in a solid color, Waverly 1 a compact stitched cube, and Brompton 1 a zip-up travel winder.

Two watches. Richmond 2 is horizontal and fits under a low shelf; Berkley 2 adds a storage drawer.

Four to six watches. Blackwood 4, Blackwood 6 and Langford 6 cover most collections.

Twelve watches. Blackwood 12 gives you twelve individual slots in a compact vertical grid.

Turns per day and rotation direction

A winder only helps if it is set for your movement. Most modern calibers need 650 to 1,000 turns per day and wind in both directions; some older ones wind in one direction only. The caliber decides, not the brand on the dial, so check the manufacturer's specs.

Winder, box, or both

A winder keeps a watch running; a box stores it with no mechanism. If you own both automatic and quartz watches, our winders with storage do both.

Before you order

Our pillows fit standard and larger cases; for a very thick watch or a rigid bracelet, send us the reference first. Measure your spot, since a vertical model needs clearance to open its door. Finish names describe a look, and colors vary between screens.
